Oxford Town & Gown 10K - Sunday 16th May 2010.
The Muscular Dystrophy ‘Oxfordshire Club of the Year’ Trophy.
The Oxford Town & Gown 10K, organized on behalf of Muscular Dystrophy, has been a prominent feature of the local race scene for many years. Now in its 29th year the race has helped raise almost one million pounds for the charity which has helped many local sufferers.
In addition to the invaluable support it provides for the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign the race has several other claims to fame. It is by far the largest race in Oxfordshire, regularly attracting over 3000 entrants, who have an unique opportunity to run, traffic free, through the City’s streets and passed its ‘dreaming spires’. It has also maintained its original ‘fun run’ image and a large proportion of the runners still fall into that category.
In recent years the race has been not organized locally and possibly in part because of this and in spite of its high profile, it hasn’t been particularly well supported by the majority of Oxfordshire’s running clubs. However since last year’s race and following a re-organization within Muscular Dystrophy the race is now in the hands of a local organizing committee who wish to encourage both more local participation as well as a greater involvement in the organization on the day. This is particularly important for a race that cannot call on its members for support in the way that the clubs can.
To this end the race committee have this year introduced the Muscular Dystrophy Oxfordshire Club of the Year Trophy. All clubs have to do to enter is to select a team of five nominated runners along side five colleagues who will act as marshals/volunteers on the day. Team entries will be free of charge and each team of five must include at least two women and two vets (who can be of either sex).
All clubs have to do if they wish to enter a team for the Club of the Year Trophy is to register their interest by email by to the Race Director – David Basham at dpjbash@aol.com by 10th April 2010 and subsequently complete the attached form with details of their nominated runners and volunteers and return it to the same address by 30th April 2010.
Anyone wishing to volunteer on the day can do so by contacting David either by phone or email.
Online entries for the race can be found at via the Muscular Dystrophy website at www.muscular-dystrophy.org
